St. Paul’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic landmarks in London, and has played a significant role in the city’s history. This magnificent cathedral has been a symbol of the city’s resilience and endurance, having survived fires, bombings, and wars over the centuries. In this article, we will explore the history and significance of St. Paul’s Cathedral, including its architecture, art, and cultural significance.

The History and Architecture of St. Paul’s Cathedral

St. Paul’s Cathedral was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, a renowned architect who was appointed by King Charles II to rebuild London after the Great Fire of 1666. The cathedral was completed in 1710, after 35 years of construction. It is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, with its iconic dome being one of the largest in the world.

The cathedral’s façade is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures, including a magnificent portico featuring statues of the four evangelists. Inside, the cathedral boasts a stunning interior with intricate frescoes, mosaics, and stained-glass windows. The main feature of the interior is the magnificent dome, which spans 111 meters high and offers breathtaking views of London.

The Cultural Significance of St. Paul’s Cathedral

St. Paul’s Cathedral is not only a significant religious site, but also an important cultural landmark in London. It has been the site of many important events throughout history, including the funerals of several prominent British figures, such as Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher.

The cathedral has also played a significant role in British literature and popular culture. It has been featured in numerous films, including Mary Poppins and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In addition, St. Paul’s Cathedral has been referenced in many famous works of literature, such as Charles Dickens’ Bleak House and Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway.

The Art and Treasures of St. Paul’s Cathedral

St. Paul’s Cathedral is also home to many important works of art and treasures. The cathedral’s collection includes many pieces of religious art, including statues, frescoes, and paintings. One of the most famous pieces is the painting of the Conversion of St. Paul, by the Italian artist Caravaggio.

Another important feature of the cathedral is the Whispering Gallery, located around the base of the dome. The Whispering Gallery is a circular walkway that offers visitors the opportunity to whisper to each other from opposite sides of the gallery and be heard perfectly, due to the unique acoustics of the dome.

In addition, the cathedral’s crypt is home to many notable tombs and memorials, including those of Sir Christopher Wren, Lord Nelson, and the Duke of Wellington. The crypt also houses the Chapel of the Order of the British Empire, which is dedicated to the members of the order who have passed away.

Visiting St. Paul’s Cathedral

If you are planning to visit St. Paul’s Cathedral, there are several things you should keep in mind. The cathedral is open to visitors every day, except on Sundays when it is only open for worship services. Admission fees apply, with discounts available for students and seniors.

One of the most popular activities for visitors is to climb the 528 steps to the top of the dome, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of London. However, it is important to note that this climb is not recommended for those with heart or respiratory conditions, and children under the age of 8 are not allowed.

For those who prefer not to climb, there are several other areas of the cathedral to explore, including the nave, choir, and chapels. Guided tours are also available, providing visitors with a wealth of information about the cathedral’s history and architecture.

It is important to dress appropriately when visiting St. Paul’s Cathedral, as it is a place of worship. Shorts, tank tops, and bare shoulders are not allowed, and photography is only permitted in certain areas of the cathedral.

In history, essays are widely used to determine and evaluate the progress of students. History essays put a variety of skills to the test, like historical comprehension, explanation, and analysis. Students should analyze the question, comprehend its emphasis and requirements, gather facts and feedback through studies, and then build a clear and well-organized response to compose an effective assignment.

Even for the most capable students, writing a great history assignment should be strict and challenging. Essay writing, like other skills, evolves and gets better. Each essay you write increases your competence and confidence.

Investigate The Issue

This is a no-brainer, but it’s one that a few students sadly overlook. The first stage in writing an effective essay, regardless of the subject or theme, is to give the issue a lot of thought. But hey, you can always buy an assignment from a reliable writing service.

A task will be posted in an essay question. It may ask you to find out the causes or consequences of a specific event or circumstance. It may inquire as to whether you agree or disagree with an assertion. It may request that you explain and analyze the causes or effects of a specific event. It could also request you to rate the relative importance of a person or an event.

You should start by thoroughly reading the essay. Consider what you’ll be required to do. Who or what is it urging you to focus on? Is there a specific timeframe stated or implied? What problem does it need you to solve?

Start With A Strategy

A plan is always the first step in any essay. As soon as you’ve received the essay question and provided it with some consideration, start making a plan.

Strategizing and jotting down the thoughts are good ways to get ready for research. What are the initial ideas or responses to the question? What are some of the topics, events, or issues that are related to the question? Are there any other questions or concerns that arise as a result of the question? What are some of the subjects or events that you’d like to learn more about? What scholars or sources do you think would be useful?

Consult the teacher, a knowledgeable classmate, and someone you can rely on. Keep in mind that as you gather more information, your strategy may change.

Research

Attempting to write a history assignment without conducting research is akin to attempting to cook a pie without dough. You’d probably wind up with nothing but fluff and no material. It’s time to begin collecting information and data to back up your assertion once you’ve identified a solid vision for your essay.

You may begin by learning books that give you an overview of the topic and its importance. It will help you gain a better understanding of the subject and write a more thorough essay.

Ensure that only data that is meaningful to the discourse is identified and selected during the research.

Make A Strong Thesis Statement

It is critical to have a concise essay when composing a history assignment or any other type of essay. Even though this appears to be a simple task, many students end up publishing declarations rather than a thesis.

A thesis is your viewpoint or point of view on the subject – what you believe and the case you’ll make. Don’t simply restate the main question or create a simple statement. You can then go on to create the thesis in succeeding sections after you’ve set your thesis.

Construct An Argument

Every good history essay has a clear and compelling argument. The main argument of the essay is called contention. It responds to the question and the focus of the writing.

You must be capable of expressing your point of view in a single sentence if possible. An essay based on this argument would then go on to clarify these claims in more depth. It will use argument and evidence to back up its claim.

You must begin to think about contention for the essay at some point during the research. Remember that you must express it succinctly as if you were answering the assignment in a short statement or summarising a debate.

Make A Strong First Impression

Many people believe that the introduction is the most crucial part of an essay. It’s necessary for several reasons. It is the first time the reader encounters your essay. It’s where you first respond to the question and state your point of view. It’s also where you’ll map out the course of your essay.

Tourists often refer to Elizabeth’s clock tower at the Palace of Westminster as Big Ben. However, originally only the largest bell of the six others in the clock was so called, weighing 13 tons. Currently the images of the clock, bell and tower are united and together they form the most popular tourist symbol of London. The tower is 96 meters high. The style of the building is neo-Gothic. His facade is decorated with inscriptions in Latin.

Big Ben. Certainly the main tourist attraction not only in London, but in the whole Great Britain, Big Ben, despite the fact that in 2012 it was renamed into Elizabethan Tower, remains for us the clock tower, which we strive to get to first thing after arriving in the capital of Great Britain!

First of all, we offer to understand the term Big Ben itself. So. On the banks of the Thames stands the Royal Palace called Westminster Palace. Inside this palace, nowadays, the English Parliament sits. The Palace of Westminster for this reason is also called House of Parliament or House of Parliament. The Palace of Westminster in its present form came into being in 1865, after the old version was almost completely destroyed by fire. And in this, in the new version, the Palace has a clock tower in 1859. That is, the tower on top of which is a clock. Why on top? Because when the bells of the clock mechanism chime, this chime could be heard far away from the tower. There are a total of 6 bells inside the tower and here the most important of these bells was named with the first three letters after the foreman or, in another version, a popular boxer of those times. The name is Benjamin. And the big one in English is Ben. So that’s how Big Ben came to be. Subsequently, the name of the big bell began to be called and the clock tower itself. And in 2012, in honor of the 60-year anniversary of Elizabeth II on the throne, the tower was renamed Elizabeth Tower, or Elizabeth Tower in English. But the name of the bell remained the same. So that’s the quest. By the way, there is a feeling that the name Big Ben, no matter how you rename the tower, will forever remain with it.

You can find the most famous facts and parameters of Big Ben on Wikipedia. And below we give, in our opinion, what can be most useful for tourists

  • It is almost impossible to get inside the tower.
  • However the administration is giving free lectures inside the palace and about Big Ben.
  • Photos of Big Ben are best taken before 11:00 from Westminster Bridge from its west sidewalk and right in the middle of the bridge or a perfect shot that few people know about TUT. Another great shot, like the photo above, can be taken from the Ferris wheel. But again before lunch, because in the afternoon the sun goes behind Big Ben and lights up the shot.
  • The sound of the main bell, which is called Big Ben, can only be heard once an hour when the bell strikes the number of hours. At 15, 30 and 45 minutes, the other bells play
  • There is a microphone inside the tower that is directly connected to the BBC studio and by listening to the hourly chimes on the radio, we hear not a recording, but a live broadcast of the bell
  • Formerly the dial was lit from inside by gas burners.
  • Now, if the white lamp at the top of the tower is lit, it means that Parliament is in session at that moment and you can go inside for free and listen to debates in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

Also, you may know that the human ear only needs to hear the sound of Big Ben once to be able to recognize it without any problems the next time. This is because the sound is unique because of the crack that appeared on the bell and because of the sawed square in the path of that crack to stop it. The crack and the square is what made Big Ben sound unique.

If you are interested in more information about Big Ben, email us, we’ll try to answer your questions.

Oh, and one more thing. About the attitude of locals to Big Ben. For us, after all, there is an opportunity to get inside the tower. But not many of us know this and only a few get on tours of the tower. On New Year’s Eve, London’s famous fireworks display is set up right in front of Big Ben on the Observation Wheel and we almost always welcome the new year at our beloved Big Ben.

One of the main and recognizable landmarks of the capital of England. Over 40,000 people use the suspension drawbridge every day to get to the other side of the Thames. The total length of the bridge is 244 meters. The towers are 65 meters high. At a height of 44 meters is a gallery between the towers, it is used as an observation deck and museum. Between the towers there are lifting wings. They are raised about 4-5 times a week.

The most widely used symbol of London – Tower Bridge – was opened in 1894. It is both bascule and suspension. The bridge is designed so that when the lower central span is opened for the passage of ships, the upper gallery, to which the stairs in both towers lead, remains open for pedestrians wishing to cross the Thames. However, today the gallery is more often used as an observation deck, it is also equipped with a museum.
The design of Tower Bridge is such that when the lower central span is raised, the upper gallery remains open to visitors.

The views from the huge windows of the Tower Bridge Gallery are spectacular. To the west is the City of London with its distinctive cucumber skyscraper (off-limits to tourists) and the brand new The Shard, with its observation deck. And looking east, you can see the dome of the Greenwich Observatory and St. Catherine’s Docks.

Tower Bridge Facts

  • The Tower Bridge is 244 meters long.
  • The height of the two supporting towers – 65 meters, the central span between them – 61 m.
  • The upper gallery is raised 42 meters above the main bridge.

The church on the site dates back to the 7th century and has been rebuilt and enlarged many times, until it was finally completed in 1745. This wonderful example of early English Gothic architecture has become a symbol of the British nation. All the monarchs of Britain since 1066 were crowned here and 18 of them are buried here. The Abbey walls have seen many royal weddings.

On May 8, 1945, when the end of World War II was officially declared, a short thanksgiving service was held in the cathedral every hour, which was attended by about 25,000 people, from the Lord Chancellor to the common Britons.
The abbey gets its name from the English West Minster, the “western church” in London.

What to see

The Abbey’s recognizable skyline with its two towers and numerous tracery arches, its beautiful stained glass windows and richly decorated interiors have always attracted tourists. As a result, the abbey has become one of the most visited attractions in the world. The church is interesting not only for its elaborate decor, but also as a pantheon of prominent Britons. In total there are about 3000 tombstones and, for example, the graves of great English literary figures can be found in one place – Poets’ Corner. The abbey is also interesting for music lovers: concerts of sacred and secular music are constantly held here. The cathedral is open to tourists every day (according to the schedule), except Sunday, when there are services for the faithful.
Buried in the abbey are Queens Elizabeth and Victoria, poets Geoffrey Chaucer and Robert Burns, Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, politician Neville Chamberlain, Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, Martin Luther King the Younger, Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna (the older sister of Nicholas II).

Westminster Abbey is not only a religious building, but a real treasury, whose riches include masterpieces of painting, monumental and applied art, wonderful fabrics, tapestries and church utensils of rare beauty. The Abbey is especially proud of its collection of ancient folios and unique archival documents, which made it an important research center.

Rules of visiting

Filming and photographing in the abbey is forbidden. You can take pictures in the garden or at a nearby college, and you are encouraged to buy postcards as a memento.
Phone use is not allowed in the church, but can be turned on nearby in the College Garden.
Animals, other than guide dogs, are not allowed on the grounds.
Westminster is an active church, so it is recommended to dress modestly, plus men should remove their hats before entering. High heels can be uncomfortable: the floor in the abbey is uneven, with many steps.
No luggage or large backpacks are allowed into the church; bulky and heavy items can be deposited in the luggage room at Charing Cross and Victoria stations near the abbey.

Practical information

The address is 20 Deans Yard, London. The nearest tube stations are Westminster and St James’s Park. Most London buses pass by the Abbey. Parking is not available in front of the building itself, but there is a pay parking garage nearby at College Garden Q-Park Westminster (from 11.5 GBP and up, book a space on the Q-Park website).

Located on the islands of the River Len. In wartime it was able to withstand a long siege due to its location. For a long time it was the residence of the kings of England. Currently popular with tourists as a monument of architecture and history. The interior has been recreated in the style of the 15th century castle. Within its walls are works of art of the XVIII century. In the landscaped park has many aviaries with exotic birds.

Leeds Castle is just an hour’s drive from London, in the county of Kent. The stone palace with more than a thousand years of history welcomes tourists from all over the world, and in addition to standard excursions offers travelers a whole range of entertainment: from golf to falconry. But first about Leeds Castle itself. It was built in the 11th century by a Norman baron. 150 years later the palace (although the architecture is more like a stone fortress) came into the possession of the rulers of England. For many centuries Leeds Castle remained a royal residence, but in the early 20th century it passed, so to speak, into private hands.
A favorite activity for tourists at Leeds Castle is wandering around the giant labyrinth and riding segways.

The monument of architecture of national importance was bought by wealthy English lady Baillie and, admittedly, greatly improved it. Look at the interior of the castle, getting into which, involuntarily, you feel like a resident of Leeds. Comfortable antique furniture, fresh flowers, even a blazing fireplace – everything in the palace disposes to be carried away for a while about nine centuries ago, and stay here much longer than allotted for the tour. After a tour of Leeds Castle, you can go golfing. The hundreds of acres of green surrounding the palace are just perfect for this game. But don’t forget that it’s not free – from 15 GBP during the week and from 20 GBP at the weekend.

Another no less fun activity that you can devote an hour to is wandering around a giant “living” maze. More on that point? The fact is that yew trees have been growing on the castle grounds for many years. Today there are over two thousand of them. In fact, these yews make up the labyrinth. Keep in mind that once you get there, you cannot stop halfway. The thick trees, though carefully trimmed by gardeners, are taller than people.
When you’re at Leeds Castle don’t miss the Falconry with its trained birds – eagles, owls, hawks and falcons.

The shows are daily at 2 p.m. (April to September) and 1:30 p.m. (October to March). But be aware that if the weather is “unlucky,” the performances will be canceled. For children, Leeds Castle has a Medieval village where young explorers can climb, jump and frolic at will. However, children over the age of five are allowed here.

Not only can you explore the beauty of the park and gardens surrounding Leeds Castle on your own, you can also rent Segways. These modern two-wheeled “scooters” tourists are issued for half an hour and a whole hour. This time is just enough to get used to the new mode of transport and see the local area. One Segway rental costs from 20 GBP.

Leeds Castle opening times are 10:30am-6pm (April-September) and 10:30am-5pm (October-March). The Castle is closed July 12 (after 2pm), November 8 and 9, and December 25.
Admission is 28 GBP for adults, 27 GBP for students and senior citizens and 19.50 GBP for children (4 to 15 years). For children under four years old free of charge.

If you want you can stay in Leeds Castle for a few days. There are spacious, modern cottages near the palace with all the comforts of home.

The fortress is one of the oldest structures in England and one of the most visited attractions in the world. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Tower was founded in the second century as part of the city’s fortifications and was later completed and fortified by William I and Richard the Lionheart. Nowadays there is a museum in the Tower, an armory with the Crown Jewels and historic monuments.

The Tower of London has become a symbol not only of London but of the whole of Great Britain. It occupies a special place in British history, so now the Tower is one of the most visited architectural and historical sites in the world.

The Tower is essentially a fortress. It stands on the north bank of the River Thames and is one of the oldest buildings in England and the historical center of London. The history of this fortress is mixed: originally it was built as a defensive castle, and then it served as a zoo, a mint, an arsenal, a prison, an observatory and a repository of royal treasures.
The size of the Tower is 32 by 36 meters with towers 30 meters high.

History of the Tower

The Tower was built in 1078, and in 1190 in the fortress was imprisoned the first prisoner. Only 7 executions were carried out in this prison for dignitaries and monarchs, the victims included Henry VIII’s wives Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard and the “Queen of Nine Days” Jane Grey. From its early years, the Tower began to develop all sorts of rumors and legends, sometimes very sinister. Some of them can be heard during tours of this famous fortress.

Museum

Today the Tower of London looks much as it did in the 11th century. Its primary purpose is as a museum with a rich collection and armoury, holding the treasures of the British Crown. Officially, the fortress continues to be considered one of the royal residences. There are several private apartments, where the staff and sometimes high guests reside. The Tower offers guided tours, where the guides serve as bifiters – English guards. They are dressed in dark blue Victorian-era uniforms, and on holidays, in lavish Tudor-era costumes, which adds to tourists’ interest in the fortress.

Events at the Tower

In addition to the traditional tour of the exhibits and interiors in the Tower, you can have some fun: for example, from December 27 to 31 there is a celebration of the New Year in medieval costume. King Richard III, knights, and minstrels greet tourists. Even if you don’t know how to skate, don’t miss the opportunity to have fun at the Tower Rink. People come here both in the morning, as a fitness at the beginning of the day, and in the evening, when you want romance: the fortress is illuminated by lights that are reflected in the ice. Rink works from November 17 to January 2, tickets cost from 10.5 to 14.5 EUR.
